Adapted by playwright Harold Pinter, it is based on the 1969 novel by John Fowles. The film stars Meryl Streep and Jeremy Irons. It is 1867. In a seaside town in the south of England, a wealthy aristocrat Charles Smithson (Jeremy Irons) is courting a merchant’s daughter Ernestina (Lynsey Baxter) to marry her. During a walk, they spot a mysterious women standing on the breakwater and looking at the sea. It is Sarah (Meryl Streep), despised by the residents of the town as ‘the French lieutenant's woman’, who had been left by him a few years earlier, and waiting for him to come back. Charles and Sarah have an affair. It is 1980. During the making of the ‘the French lieutenant's woman’ film, the actress Anna and the actor Mike (Streep and Irons) are shown as having an affair similar to the relationship between the characters they are playing.
