Citizenship in an age of Brexit
and freedom of movement

Does citizenship, by definition, demarcate as well as unify? Is citizenship necessary today or is it a relic of a less-connected world? Is citizenship more robust when based on an American-style civil ideal which anyone can subscribe to? Should we understand citizenship primarily as a practical matter of rights and responsibilities or as a more subtle question of identity and allegiance?

The discussion will include: Max Wind-Cowie, a writer and political consultant , who has written for several newspapers, including The Guardian and the London Evening Standard; Madeline Grant, the assistant comment editor at The Telegraph; dr James Panton, who regularly teaches politics, philosophy, and intellectual history for the Department of Continuing Education at the University of Oxford; and Piotr Witwicki, the journalist at the Polsat News. The discussion will be hosted by Alastair Donald, an associate director at the Academy of Ideas, where he co-ordinates planning and programming for the Battle of Ideas Festival.
